17th Street Automotive Wheel Re-Torque Policy

Billy Cadaing • June 9, 2025

17th Street Automotive Re-Torque Wheel Policy

Effective Date: 06/10/2024
Applies To: All Customers Receiving Wheel Removal/Reinstallation Services

Purpose
This policy is designed to ensure customer safety, prevent wheel-off incidents, and maintain the integrity of our service standards. Proper re-torquing after wheel installation is critical to avoid potential hazards caused by wheel nut loosening due to thermal expansion, vibration, or initial settling.

When Re-Torquing Is Required
Re-torquing is strongly recommended for the following services:

Tire replacement or wheel rotation

Brake jobs involving removal of wheels

Suspension work involving wheel hub or bearing components

Axle-related repairs

Any reinstallation of wheels for any reason

Customer Acknowledgment Process
Upon service completion involving wheel removal or installation, each customer will receive a Re-Torque Reminder Form, either printed or sent digitally via email/text. The reminder includes:

Torque specification for their vehicle

Date of service

Recommended date or mileage to return (usually within 50–100 miles or 3–7 days, whichever comes first)

Waiver of liability for failure to return for re-torque

Re-Torque Service Details
Cost: Free of charge

Time Required: 10–15 minutes, walk-ins welcome

No appointment required, but customers are encouraged to call ahead if visiting during peak hours

Performed by: Certified technicians using calibrated torque wrenches to manufacturer specs

Customer Education
At the time of service, advisors and technicians will inform customers:

Why re-torquing is critical

What risks are associated with skipping the re-torque

That alloy wheels especially are susceptible to torque loss due to temperature and material expansion

Documentation & Liability
All re-torque reminders and service completion notes are logged in the Tekmetric system under the customer's vehicle history

Customers who choose not to return for a re-torque will have a note added to their file stating they were advised of the importance and declined or did not follow through

A disclaimer is included on all relevant invoices, noting that 17th Street Automotive is not liable for wheel-related issues if the recommended re-torque is not performed

Policy Sign-Off (Optional But Highly Suggested)
For high-risk jobs (suspension/lift kits/custom wheels), a customer acknowledgment signature may be required, stating they understand and accept responsibility for following up with re-torque recommendations.

Technician Accountability
All torquing is performed with calibrated tools and logged under the tech’s ID

Spot checks are done weekly to ensure calibration standards are being upheld

Any issues are documented and reviewed during technician performance evaluations

Policy Review Cycle
This policy is reviewed every 12 months or as needed in response to new safety data, equipment updates, or legal requirements.

What inspired you to start this business? This journey began when I inherited the business from firefighter Tommy Courtney—a mentor, friend, and someone who truly believed in me. He not only helped me move and settle in but also taught me the fundamentals of running a business and leading a team. More importantly, he gave me the chance to pursue something greater—to realize my full potential. One day, I hope to repay that gift in full, however I can. I’m also profoundly grateful to the friends and family who stood by me, offering both financial support and emotional encouragement. Their belief in my vision made all the difference, and I carry that with me every day. What are the core values that drive your business decisions? At 17th Street Automotive, our decisions are grounded in patience and integrity. We believe in taking the time to do things right—listening to our customers, thoroughly diagnosing each vehicle, and never rushing the process just to move on to the next. Integrity means being transparent, honest, and standing by our work, even when no one’s watching. These values are the foundation of the trust we've built with our community, and we’re deeply grateful for the opportunity to uphold them every day. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business? While fixing cars has always come naturally to me, the real challenge was learning how to run a business—understanding the financials, managing a team, and making decisions that impact more than just myself. I’m just a humble mechanic at heart, and for over 25 years, I’ve poured in blood, sweat, tears, time, and relentless effort to build something meaningful. The transition from turning wrenches to leading a business has been one of the most demanding and rewarding journeys of my life. I’m incredibly grateful for the lessons learned and for the people—mentors, staff, family, and customers—who have supported me every step of the way. How do you differentiate your business from competitors in your industry? At 17th Street Automotive, we pride ourselves on professionalism and a deep commitment to the people we serve—especially our local community, first responders, and military personnel. What truly sets us apart is not just the quality of our work, but the purpose behind it. We invest heavily in continuous improvement—upgrading our tools, expanding our services, and supporting the professional growth of our team. We believe in building for the future. That’s why we host a high school mentorship program, offer ongoing in-person and online training for certifications and licenses, and actively engage the community through events and meaningful projects, like our locally inspired murals. I’ve always believed in investing in oneself, in our employees, and in our neighbors. This mindset drives every decision we make—from offering 24-hour emergency contact, fleet delivery and drop-off services, free loaner cars, and rental options, to backing our work with a 3-year/36,000-mile nationwide warranty, loyalty programs, and even lifetime warranty plans for eligible services. We’re also embracing the future of transportation by expanding into hybrid, electric, and autonomous vehicle service. Everything we do is centered on growing as a team, serving with integrity, and building a business that truly champions people. What are some key factors that have contributed to your success? Our success has been shaped by a combination of resourcefulness, continuous learning, and staying open to innovation. Leveraging free resources from organizations like The Hive has been invaluable in helping us build a strong foundation, especially in the early stages. We've embraced A.I. technology—using advanced repair management software like Tekmetric, integrated with a powerful ShopGenie CRM and an intuitive online scheduling system—to streamline operations and enhance the customer experience. We've also benefited greatly from coaching and guidance through the Automotive Training Institute (ATI), which has helped us grow as leaders and sharpen our business practices. And when it comes to marketing, we’ve learned the importance of authenticity. Who better to represent your business than you? Staying engaged, being present, and sharing our story with honesty has allowed us to connect deeply with our community. I’m profoundly grateful for the tools, mentors, and people who have helped shape our journey at 17th Street Automotive. How do you give back to the communities you serve? At 17th Street Automotive, giving back is at the heart of who we are. We proudly support our first responders through community car washes, midnight car shows, and contributions to organizations like the VB Fire Foundation and the Samaritan House. We’re especially passionate about mentoring the next generation, dedicating time and resources to local high school mentorship programs at First Colonial, Green Run, and Kempsville. Each year, we host our 9/11 First Responders Appreciation Day—a heartfelt event featuring free food, cornhole tournaments, and giveaways—as a small way to honor the men and women who sacrifice so much for our safety and well-being. Giving back isn’t just something we do—it’s part of our identity. We’re continuously looking for meaningful ways to show our gratitude and invest in the community that has given us so much. What’s your go-to source of inspiration when you hit a creative or motivational slump? In moments of challenge or doubt, I draw strength from many places. My faith in God grounds me and reminds me of my purpose. I’m deeply inspired by my mentor and the previous owner, Tommy Courtney, whose guidance helped shape the values of this business. I also find motivation through my ATI coach, Eric Twiggs, who continues to push me to grow as a leader. Whether it’s a powerful message from a YouTube video, an insightful article, or an uplifting book, I seek out resources that fuel both my mind and spirit. But above all, it’s the people around me—my incredible family, my best friends, my partner, and our loyal customers—who remind me why I do what I do. Their encouragement, trust, and belief in this journey keep me going even on the toughest days. If your business were a person, how would you describe its personality? If 17th Street Automotive were a person, it would be proudly eccentric—a little unconventional, deeply passionate, and full of character. It’s someone who doesn’t just follow the crowd, but carves their own path with purpose and heart. This "person" would be the kind of neighbor who shows up when it matters most, always ready to lend a hand, share some wisdom, and never afraid to get their hands dirty. There’s a deep sense of pride in being different—because it’s that difference that allows us to connect more meaningfully with people, build trust, and serve with empathy. Every quirk reflects the heart of our team: hardworking, community-focused, and driven by the belief that doing things the right way matters. What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs? Every challenge has a solution—your job as an entrepreneur is to find it. Don’t become the obstacle to progress; instead, be the one who brings clarity, improvement, and vision to the table. Focus on making things better, and then make them look professional. Start with a solid foundation: develop a clear business plan with 5- to 10-year growth goals, and seek out the many free resources available in your community—like The HIVE in Virginia Beach. Collaboration is key. Connect with other business owners, join programs like the UPLIFT Program sponsored by the City of Virginia Beach and AGH Advisory, and never underestimate the value of a good coach or mentor. Often, the support you need is already around you—you just have to reach out. Most importantly, protect what you’re building. Remember the acronym B.A.I.L.: Banker, Accountant, Insurance, Legal. These are the four pillars that will help safeguard your business as it grows. Running a business takes heart, grit, and humility. We at 17th Street Automotive are living proof that with the right mindset and community support, anything is possible. Standard vs. Metric: Understanding the Tools Behind the Wrenches at 17th Street Automotive At 17th Street Automotive in Virginia Beach, we work on all makes and models—from classic American muscle cars to modern European and Japanese vehicles. That means our toolbox has to include both standard (SAE) and metric tools. But what’s the real difference? And why does it matter to your vehicle’s service? In this blog, we break down the history, usage, and accuracy of standard vs. metric measurements and explain why understanding both systems is critical in the automotive repair industry. 🔧 A Quick History: Why Two Systems? The standard (or SAE – Society of Automotive Engineers) system uses inches and fractions of inches, and it has deep roots in American manufacturing. It was the norm for U.S.-built cars and trucks throughout much of the 20th century. The metric system, on the other hand, is based on millimeters and centimeters, and it’s used globally. As foreign-made vehicles from Japan, Germany, Korea, and elsewhere became popular in the U.S., the automotive industry had to adapt to a dual-measurement world. Today, even many U.S. automakers like Ford and GM design parts using the metric system because of global supply chains and manufacturing efficiencies. 🔩 Standard (SAE) Tools and Measurement Standard measurement is based on inches and fractions—think 1/2", 9/16", or 3/8". It was the primary system for American vehicles until the 1980s and is still common on older trucks, classic cars, and domestic heavy-duty equipment. Common uses in auto repair: Classic American vehicles Large trucks and older utility vehicles Custom or aftermarket parts made in the U.S. Benefits: Familiarity for U.S. technicians Readily available replacement parts for older vehicles 🔧 Metric Tools and Measurement The metric system uses millimeters and is the standard for nearly every modern vehicle worldwide. You’ll see tools like 10mm, 13mm, or 17mm sockets used in almost every modern repair. Common uses in auto repair: All European, Asian, and modern U.S. vehicles Engines, electrical components, sensors, and suspension systems EVs and hybrid vehicles (often metric only) Benefits: Universally adopted in automotive manufacturing Easier decimal-based calculations Standardized across global platforms 🎯 Which Is More Accurate? Technically, both systems are accurate—they’re just different units of measure. However, the metric system is generally considered more precise, particularly for engineering and manufacturing, due to its base-10 simplicity and tighter tolerances. For example: A 10mm socket fits a bolt head that’s exactly 10mm across. A 3/8” socket (roughly 9.525mm) is close but not an exact match for 10mm. Using the wrong system can strip bolts or damage parts, which is why proper identification and tool selection are crucial. 🔧 Why It Matters at 17th Street Automotive At 17th Street Automotive, we work on everything from: American trucks with standard fasteners European luxury cars with precision metric specs Japanese hybrids and electric vehicles with global standard fittings Our technicians are trained to identify and use both systems properly, and our bays are equipped with full SAE and metric toolsets, including digital torque wrenches and diagnostic tools. Whether it’s a 9/16” lug nut or a 17mm sensor bolt, you can count on us for precision and care. 🛠️ Schedule Service with Virginia Beach's Trusted Mechanics From classic restoration to modern diagnostics, 17th Street Automotive is your go-to shop for reliable, knowledgeable, and transparent automotive care. R-134a vs. R-1234yf: What's the Difference? | 17th Street Automotive, Virginia Beach At 17th Street Automotive in Virginia Beach, we often get questions about the difference between R-134a and R-1234yf refrigerants. These are the two most common refrigerants used in modern automotive air conditioning systems, and it’s important to understand how they differ—especially when it comes to diagnostics, cost, and environmental impact. R-134a: The Longtime Standard R-134a has been the standard automotive refrigerant since the early 1990s. It replaced R-12 (Freon) due to environmental concerns and has been widely used in cars and light trucks for over two decades. Key Characteristics of R-134a: Used in most vehicles made before 2015 Affordable and widely available Requires standard A/C service machines Moderate global warming potential (GWP) Compatible with a broad range of aftermarket parts R-134a is still commonly used in older vehicles, and we continue to offer full diagnostic and recharge services using R-134a here at 17th Street Automotive. R-1234yf: The New Generation Refrigerant Starting in 2015, most manufacturers began transitioning to R-1234yf to meet strict environmental regulations. This new refrigerant has a significantly lower GWP and is considered more eco-friendly. Key Characteristics of R-1234yf: Required in most vehicles manufactured from 2015 onward Much lower global warming potential than R-134a Requires specialized A/C equipment and certified technicians More expensive than R-134a due to production and handling standards Designed to reduce environmental impact without sacrificing performance At 17th Street Automotive, our certified technicians are fully equipped to service R-1234yf systems using OEM-grade recovery and recharge machines. We also ensure every A/C service is logged through our digital inspection system and reported to Carfax for full transparency. Why It Matters to You Using the wrong refrigerant or improperly servicing your A/C system can cause serious damage and void your warranty. Whether your vehicle uses R-134a or R-1234yf, it’s essential to trust a qualified repair shop with the right tools and training. At 17th Street Automotive, we provide: A/C diagnostics for both refrigerant types Proper recovery, evacuation, and recharging Leak detection using UV dye or electronic sniffers Full A/C system repairs with nationwide warranty coverage Schedule Your A/C Service in Virginia Beach Whether your vehicle uses R-134a or R-1234yf, our team at 17th Street Automotive is here to help. Understanding Automotive A/C Issues: Diagnosing the Difference Between No Air, Warm Air & Cool Air in Virginia Beach At 17th Street Automotive in Virginia Beach, we specialize in honest, thorough, and professional automotive A/C diagnostics and repair. Whether you're experiencing no air output, warm air, or just not cold enough A/C, we break down what each symptom might mean—and how our certified technicians properly diagnose and service each one. We also explain the critical differences between R-134a and 1234yf refrigerants, so you know exactly what’s under the hood. 🚗 Common A/C Problems – Diagnosed the Right Way 1. A/C Diagnostics – No Air Output at All If your vents are completely silent and nothing is blowing, this typically points to: A failed blower motor Faulty blower motor resistor Electrical relay or fuse issues Burnt Connector A malfunctioning HVAC control unit Our Process: * Check fuses and relays with a multimeter * Test blower motor operation * Scan for HVAC fault codes * Verify power and ground to all relevant components This is an electrical or mechanical issue, not a refrigerant issue. 2. A/C Service – Warm or Hot Air Only If your A/C is blowing air, but it’s as warm as the outside temperature, the problem may involve: Low refrigerant charge (common) A faulty compressor Compressor clutch not engaging Expansion valve or orifice tube blockage Leak in the system (detected via UV dye or electronic sniffer) Our Process: * Perform full A/C pressure test and leak detection * Inspect compressor function and clutch operation * Identify refrigerant type (R-134a or 1234yf) * Evacuate, measure, and recharge to factory specs This falls under A/C mechanical and refrigerant-related repairs 3. A/C Service – Cool but Not Cold If your system blows somewhat cool air but doesn’t get cold, this usually indicates: Undercharged system (refrigerant low) Weak compressor performance Clogged condenser or cabin air filter Blend door actuator malfunction Our Process: * Temperature and pressure testing * Visual inspection of condenser and filters * Cabin airflow checks * Functional test of HVAC blend doors This issue is often misdiagnosed, so precision testing is crucial. At 17th Street Automotive, we are fully equipped to diagnose and recharge both R-134a and 1234yf systems. We use manufacturer-grade A/C recovery and recharge machines, and all work is documented and reported to Carfax with photos through our digital vehicle inspection system. Don’t Just Recharge—Diagnose! Too often, drivers are told they “just need a recharge,” when the real issue could be a small leak, a failing component, or even an electrical fault. That’s why our A/C diagnostic includes: * Visual and pressure testing * Leak checks * Temperature output analysis * Electrical system inspection * Correct refrigerant ID and handling We service all makes and models, including Hybrid and EV A/C systems, with industry-leading warranties on parts and labor. Is it when something is the cheapest? Or is it what you get for your money? When it comes to the automotive industry here are some thoughts to consider. For a shop to do things cheaper what are you giving up? Does the shop have experienced professionals that are properly trained or people just learning on your vehicle? Do they carry garage liability insurance in case something happens? Do they keep up with today’s technology, invest in tools and update equipment such as Recall/TSB service campaigns, Module reprogramming, Software updates, ADAS/Alignment Calibration, R1234yf refrigerant or Electric Vehicle/Hybrids? Do they use the best quality parts or just the cheapest they can buy? How long and how far do they stand behind their work? Do they offer above and beyond services like shuttle services, service reminders, digital courtesy checks and scheduled appointments? After removing and reinstalling wheels, it's generally recommended to retorque the lug nuts after driving a short distance, typically between 50 and 100 miles, to account for any initial settling of the wheel hardware. After that, regular retorquing should be part of routine maintenance, such as every 5,000 miles or during tire rotations. Additionally, retorquing is essential after any service involving wheel removal, like brake work or suspension repairs. Elaboration: Initial Retorque: After installing new wheels or re-installing them after removal, the lug nuts should be retorqued after driving a short distance (e.g., 50-100 miles). This allows the wheel hardware to settle and ensures the lug nuts are tightened to the correct torque specification. Regular Retorque: As part of your regular maintenance, it's a good idea to retorque your lug nuts every 5,000 miles or during tire rotations. This helps to prevent loosening of the wheel hardware due to driving vibrations and temperature changes. Post-Service Retorque: Any service that involves removing the wheels, such as brake work or suspension repairs, requires retorquing of the lug nuts. This is because these services can affect the torque of the lug nuts, and it's important to re-apply the correct torque after the service. Importance of Torque: Proper torque is crucial for the safety and longevity of your wheels and the vehicle. Under-tightening can lead to wheels coming loose while driving, while over-tightening can damage the wheel or lug nuts. Checking Torque Specifications: Always refer to your vehicle's owner's manual or a trusted source for the correct torque specifications for your vehicle's lug nuts.

AC stop leak products are designed to seal minor leaks in a car's air conditioning system, potentially saving money and hassle compared to traditional repairs. How it works: Circulation: AC stop leak is added to the AC system and circulates with the refrigerant. Sealing: The product reacts with moisture and air at the leak point, forming a seal and preventing further refrigerant loss. Target areas: It can seal leaks in various components like hoses, fittings, evaporator and condenser coils, compressor seals, and service ports. Important considerations: Temporary fix: AC stop leak is primarily a temporary solution for small leaks and might not be effective for larger leaks or significant system damage. Potential damage: If not used correctly or if the leak is too large, AC stop leak can potentially clog the system, leading to further issues and potentially expensive repairs. Professional opinions: Some mechanics advise AGAINST using AC stop leak due to potential risks to the system and the possibility of damaging their refrigerant recovery equipment (100% true) System compatibility: Ensure the AC stop leak product is compatible with your vehicle's AC system and refrigerant type. Alternatives: For a more permanent and reliable solution, especially for larger leaks, consider having a certified AC technician diagnose and repair the issue. Note: While AC stop leak can be a helpful tool for minor leaks, it's crucial to weigh the pros and cons and consider professional advice if needed. 17th Street Automotive Staff
